I’ve been sewing for over twenty years and I’ve used more expensive machines from Singer and Toyota but I always come back to my Brother. I purchased the 925D Serger brand new at Walmart for $200 and its still my favorite machine. I sew apparel for myself as well as other people (mostly proms and weddings), and I would say that I use my serger at least once a week, on various types of fabric from heavy denim to bridal satins and chiffon. I’ve even used it to do the decorative rolled hem stitching on several wedding veils. Most recently I’ve started using it to do decorative trim for home decor projects around the house.
Over the last few years I’ve had minor problems with threads breaking or loose/incomplete stitches which would lead most people to think that its time for a new machine, but a quick adjustment to the tension knobs or even changing the needle (if its slightly bent) clears up the problems right away. My husband has offered to buy me a new machine but I see no reason to part with something so reliable and easy to use, even if it is ten years old. I think the 925D is one of the best sewing investments I’ve ever made.
