I have been cleaning my carpets on my knees and lots of elbow grease. Hello?! With only the two of us and one cat in the house the carpets do not really get that bad. We don’t walk around on our carpets in shoes and vacuum regularly. But dust is dust, and eventually it settles and becomes abrasive to the carpet fibers. I have followed the myth “every carpet cleaning takes life out of your carpet” Come on! Does every shower take life out of our body? I would say if you do not clean your carpets often enough the settled dust and dirt on the bottom of the carpet will take life out of it.

We really did not know much about steam cleaners except that we really wanted on badly. Can’t keep cleaning carpets on my knees all my life. So after lots of research on epinions.com and other sites we decided to get the Hoover.

One recommendation I would like to make to people is to buy equipment like this from a small shop which specializes in floor care equipment. Why? Because the people that work there are experts and very knowledgeable about the products they sell. They would have done the research for you as they take pride in what they sell and they will only have top quality products in their store – if they didn’t, they would be out of business very fast. They are not box-pushers like the big stores where you will get a store clerk tell you “yeah it’s a good product” but how would they really know? Do your research and go to a big store and ask the store clerk to tell you about the product – you probably won’t get more info than what s/he can read off the box right in front of you – then throw some question at them. They will most likely not be able to answer them. I am saying this because I have encountered this kind of situation many times when shopping around for things. So, the guys at the specialized store will be able to answer all of your questions and put you at ease about any concerns you may have.

Our local vacuum store specialist told me so much about the product – we were in the store for 1.5 hrs and I have done lots of research myself prior to that. He gave us tips and tricks about the equipment, detergent, how to maintain it. He took his model apart and put it together and did a cleaning demo for us. He also took the steam cleaner we purchased out of the box and put that together for us so that we could start cleaning right away.

They will also be able to order replacement parts for you, or repair the product if need be. Those are just a few of the advantages to buy in a specialized store.

As soon as we got home we studied to manual (which I highly recommend that people do before using the product) and we were ready to clean our Carpets. The only concern I still had was whether the water tank would leak as I read in one of the reviews that it would. And sure enough we filled up our tank and it leaked like a sieve. I called the guys ho sold it to us and he asked us to bring the tank back right away – we did and he replaced it with a new one but before he gave it to us he tested for leaks right in front of us. No leaks.

We have carpets on 2 floors of our house (approx 1000 sqft plus 2 staircases) I can not describe my amazement when we did the first pass on the carpet in the basement. As I mentioned we have one cat and he vomits often (because he eats so fast). Even though I would clean the spots and treat them I would still be able to see a hint of the spot after the carpet dried. I have used Mean Green, Special Carpet cleaning products, dishwashing liquid, vinegar – nothing ever did the trick. Well the Hoover did – we do not have one stain or hints of stains on our carpets. (And it probably also helps that we have a high quality underpad under our carpet – it has a protective barrier on top which doesn’t allow for stains to get through to unlike the cheap foam underpads which soak up the stain and it goes right into the plywood below so the stains tend to resurface)

The machine has a nice size cleaning path so the cleaning goes really fast. Ensure you use hot tap water (never pour boiling water into the tank). The most important thing is that you pick up as much water as you can with the Hoover after passing 2-4 times with detergent. The more water is being picked up by the Hoover the sooner the carpet will dry. It also has a stair cleaning attachment-very easy to work with.

You can use the Hoover to pick up spills also – it has awesome suction power. There really isn’t that much to it – fill it up with water and detergent and go. The dirty water collects in a separate bin – which is want you want in a steam cleaner. It does a fantastic job, it is easy to clean after the job is done (cleaning the machine after use is also very important). I have no complaints yet – we clean our carpets now every time the cat has an accident – oh and by the way – I forgot to mention that I tend to spill coffee on the carpet often too – impossible to clean – yet the Hoover does it. No traces of my clumsiness anywhere.
