General Electric Adora JGBP87SEMSS (Gas) Stainless Steel Range

I purchased the GE Adora JGP87SEMSS Stainless Steel Gas Range at the Home Depot in June of 2008 for $1249. I’d never had a gas stove before, but my husband insisted it was the way to go since we had the option. After 2 months of using the GE Adora JGP87SEMSS Stainless Steel Gas Range - I’m a true believer in gas being far superior to electric.

The specs

The GE Adora JGP87SEMSS measures 46 7/8 inches high x 26 1/4 inches deep x 30 inches wide. The oven has 5.0 cubic feet of cooking space.

The cook top features 5 burners:

1 All-Purpose 9100 BTU/150F degree simmer burner (left rear)

1 Center Oval 6000 BTU burner (center)

1 High Output 11000 BTU/150F degree simmer burner (left front)

1 Power Boil 16,000 BTU burner (right front)

1 Precise Simmer 5000 BTU/140F degree simmer burner (right rear).

The cooktop itself is black porcelain enamel. The burners are covered by 3 (left, center, right) removable heavy cast, black grates. The GE Adora JGBP87SEMSS also comes with a black non-stick griddle that you can swap out the center grate for.

At the back of the stove, above the cooktop, is the oven control panel. In the center is the digital display, which shows the time, oven temperature, what mode the oven is in and the timer (individually - not all at the same time).

All of the control buttons are flush with the control panel (basically you just touch the appropriate square to “push the button”). The controls include:

-Bake

-Broil

-Start/on (this must be pressed to start any cooking or cleaning function)

-Clear/off

-Self Clean

- plus and minus symbols (these are to increase and decrease temperature and time)

-Oven light

-Kitchen Timer

-Clock

-Cooking time (this will automatically turn the oven off once the time is up)

-Start time (this is to set the oven to start cooking or self-cleaning at a specified time).

The oven itself features a porcelain-enamel surface and 2 porcelain-enamel racks. There are 5 rack settings. Underneath the oven is a storage drawer.

Both the oven and cooktop operate with an electronic ignition, so there’s no pilot light to manually light with a match. Also, while the GE Adora JGBP87SEMSS comes set up for natural gas, you can convert it to propane (LP) with the included conversion kit. That’s what ours is set up for.

Why I love my GE Adora JGBP87SEMSS

This range is the bomb! The cooktop is incredibly responsive. I’ve always used an electric cooktop and the differences are astounding. The gas cooktop cooks most things faster (mostly because you don’t have to wait for the coils to heat up) and cools down quicker, too. The flame adjusts very easily with the front controls.

I’ve used all of the burners and find they all work well and mostly as described (i.e. the precise simmer burner really does allow for a more precise simmer). My only complaint about this oven is the Power Boil burner. I guess I thought that it would boil water quicker, hence the name “Power Boil,” but it really doesn’t seem to be any different than the other large burner. And that kind of stinks because gas stoves are known for taking longer to boil water. It takes me about 15 minutes to get my large spaghetti pot to boil. But, it’s a small price to pay…

Back to the good stuff. The griddle is a great feature and works really nicely. I’ve done eggs, pancakes and sausage on the griddle and all came out really well. And it lives up to its non-stick promises. It was very easy to clean.

In fact, every surface on the GE Adora JGBP87SEMSS is easy to clean. The cooktop, grates and oven shelves wipe off with a sponge and soap and water. And the oven is self-cleaning - so you just turn the self-clean on and let it go - no scrubbing required. (Though the self-clean cycle is long - 4 hours and 20 minutes - so consider setting it before bed or some other time when you won’t need to use the oven for a while.) The stainless steel also cleans easily - the range actually comes with a small bottle of stainless cleaner.

As for the oven, I have been very happy with its performance. Broiling and baking are really simple to set up on the control panel and the results have been great for me. It preheats much more quickly than my old electric and, in general, I find that baked goods usually only need to cook for the lower amount of time given in a recipe (i.e. if the recipe says 15-20 minutes, it will only take 15). My breads, cakes and cookies have all come out perfectly and evenly browned, never burned or overdone in just one spot. Broiling and baking other foods (casseroles, chicken, etc.) is just the same as with my electric oven.

This oven has a couple f features that I don’t use, but might be useful to others. As mentioned above, there’s a time bake feature. There’s also a Sabbath feature, which overrides the usual 12-hour automatic shut-off, allowing you to cook and/or keep foods warm for the entire Sabbath without having to touch the controls. (According to GE’s Web site, the Sabbath feature has been Kosher certified by Star-K.)

Overall, I have been very pleased with my purchase and would recommend the GE Adora JGBP87SEMSS Stainless Steel Range to anyone in the market for an affordable, stylish range.
