I bought this on sale at London Drugs for $60 Canadian. It was easy enough to put together, and very easy to use. I have wall-to-wall carpeting that is old and hard to keep clean (I’m in a rental), and no car, so didn’t want to go through the hassle of renting a machine from the local supermarket. I also have kids and pets, who like to leave evidence, as you can imagine.
It is very easy to use, and comes with the proprietary Dirt Devil carpet cleaning solution. The cap to the cleaning tank is the measuring cup, which is great, as that type of accessory is ridiculously easy to lose.
However, I hated the smell of the Dirt Devil cleaner, and didn’t find it that effective a cleaning solution, so I bought some Bissell anti-allergy cleaning solution, which I thought cleaned much better, and smelled far nicer. The manual warns not to use other cleaners, but I had no problem at all. I maintained the same ratio of five cap-fulls to the tank of hot water.
But be warned: this unit is NOISY. You’ll need earplugs. At least, I did.
I was very happy with the fact that I could do a high-traffic area in about 30 minutes, and it dried in about 4 hours. It’s not too heavy, and you’ll be amazed at how much black water you get in the dirty water tank. Or disgusted. Or both. And I vacuum every day. Sheesh. You may have to do multiple passes, but that’s no real sweat, and it doesn’t oversoak the carpet.
I wish it had come with attachments for corners and along the wall, but for $60 bucks, it works great. I have used the full-sized Bissell (borrowed from a friend), and this one works almost as well - the Bissell does have better suction to draw out the dirty water, and isn’t nearly as noisy. It also costs close to $300.00. You do get what you pay for.
I recommended this to a friend, who lives in the countryside and also has wall-to-wall, and she adores this machine. We’ve both had ours for about a year, and have had no problems at all. It’s made of very sturdy plastic. The one I have is bright green and clear plastic. It’s also about the size of an upright vacuum, so not hard to store.
You really can see the difference, and it really is easy to use.
