Amana AC083E Air Conditioner
The Story:
My old clunky Amana air conditioner died at the most inopportune time last weekend, as most air conditioners seem to do. Over 95 degrees with oppressive humidity. It was a few years old
and even in its prime was under whelming in performance. The entire family decided, never ever another Amana.
In sweltering heat, research was done on every low cost air conditioner in every nearby store. As we are on a budget what we needed was an 8,000 BTU window unit willing to work overtime at a meager energy cost with outstanding results.
Well, we found one at under $200 and it turned out to be another Amana because all the other highly regarded brands we researched were sold out at the mall. The only thing left was the Amana model AC083E 8,000 BTU air conditioner. We bought it on sale for $179 with low expectations, but soon fell in love.
Product Details:
The Amana AC083E is an Energy Star model with an EER of 10.8. The estimated yearly cost of operation is $45 or at least that is what the tag says. I hope it is true. This model comes in two flavors, top discharge and side discharge, ours is side discharge.
The unit is rated at 8,000 BTU’s, has a digital display thermostat with settings from 61 to 88 degrees and comes with a handy full function remote control. The controls on the unit are push button, logically laid out and easy to learn even with all the special features.
Special energy saving features include an “energy saver” mode. In this mode you set your desired temperature. When the set temperature is reached the compressor shuts down as well as the fan 3 minutes afterwards. When the room temperature rises a few degrees above the setting the compressor and fan spring back into action.
The unit also has a sleep mode. In sleep mode the unit programs itself for the next 8 hours. In this mode with a push of a button, your set temperature will raise by 2 degrees in the first hour and another 2 degrees in the second hour. The setting will remain constant for the next 6 hours.
Timer mode. In this mode you can program the unit 12 hours in advance to start up or shut down at a specified time. This is perfect for when you are at work as you can program the Amana AC083E to fire up an hour or so before you come home.
Dehumidify mode is also available. In this mode the compressor cycles on for 10 minutes and cycles off for 6 minutes. This process takes place when the room temperature varies between the set temperature by 1 degree below or 3 degrees above.
Air sweep mode must also be mentioned. This function simply allows the internal air direction louvers to sweep back and forth for even room coverage, much like a rotating fan. You can stop the sweep with the push of a button to any position desired. I really like this feature.
Of course one can mix and match some of these features, but this is not to say the machine is complicated to operate. It is simplicity itself, but it is highly versatile.
Performance So Far:
Everything it said it could do it has done and remarkably well. One advantage it has over other units is that it works very hard but is whisper quiet well doing so. Noise was the number one complaint I saw while reviewing competing units. This unit does not growl, but purrs like a lap cat. When we installed this window unit the interior temperature of the house was over 100 degrees. On full blast the mighty Amana brought the temperature down to 72 degrees. covering over 500 square feet and three rooms. I think you can tell I am very happy with this purchase.
Negative Points:
Only one, this unit is very heavy, 87 pounds to be exact which is about twice the weight of the old Amana it replaced, then again it does twice the job once installed. For most people, this is a two person installation job.
Please note the photo of the Amana AC083E Air Conditioner you will see with this review is the top discharge model and not the side discharge model I am reviewing. The Amana literature claims they are identical except for method of discharge. Why they have the same model number for both models is beyond me, but they do. My review covers the side discharge model only.
