I should have read epinions before I bought this lemon.

I like the idea of energy savings, and it has a well-insulated tank. In fact, the tank is so good that I took a nice hot shower yesterday, four days after the little green light went out. We’ve had three showers and some loads of laundry out of the thing, and I had just managed to convince myself that it was nothing more than a bad LED.

Nope. Another control board bites the dust.

Sigh.

No light means “Check power” the troubleshooter says.

The board has power. There’s current on the red and black wires, and on the blue wires. Nothing looks burnt, melted, or swollen, and all the retrofit heavier-duty connections were still tight and solid.

I had one of the early lemon boards with undersized wires and connectors that almost started a fire. When I got the board replaced, I learned the fine print in their little lifetime warranty. One replacement of any single component in a lifetime, and thereafter you pay to replace it yourself.

Since the control board is obviously the fatal flaw in this design, I guess that means I’m looking at a lifetime of having to jump through hoops every couple of years to get a new control board sent out.

That would be bad enough by itself, but what makes the whole situation so intolerable is that it is such a monumental pain to get the parts. We live in an internet age, but nobody anywhere has this part available online. I have to get out the telephone, blow the dust off of it, and try to see if I can find the phone number to that call center in Lower Slobobia.

I’m going shopping for a new water heater. It will be a lot less convenient than simply replacing the control board again, but in the long run, it will be less frustrating.
