I own around a dozen sewing machines, including two other Bernina machines. I purchased this machine specifically for travel, as it is a 3/4 sized machine. Surprisingly, this machine isn’t much lighter than the full-sized models. All Berninas have a cast aluminum frame and it shows in the weight.
Though this line of Bernina models does cost less than the full-sized machines, I have seen no difference in capablity. It uses the same patented Bernina hook to make stitches. The quality of stitches is indistinguishable from my two full-sized Berninas. It doesn’t stitch quite as fast as they do; only about as fast as other brands. There is pushbutton selection for stitches, stitch length, needle position. Unlike some other brands, though, one isn’t overwhelmed with dozens of buttons. The LCD screen is easily seen and understood–no weird codes to understand. Of particular note on the 140 is the CFL system. There is a fluorescent light, u-shaped, that casts more light on the sewing surface than I’ve seen in other brands. Plus, as indicated by the ‘C’ in the name, it doesn’t throw out heat like incandescent bulbs. This little Bernina has spent a lot of its life in the car and travels very well. There is a locking cabinet that attaches to the back of the machine for travel and sets up like a little cabinet when in use. It holds a dozen feet or so, and has adjustable compartments; I have an extra bobbin holder row in mine. To look at, one brand of machine is much as another until one starts working with it. I knew I wanted another Bernina when I wanted a machine to travel; I knew other brands. I have a superb Bernina dealer with whom I have dealt for over 20 years and she takes good care of me. For these aging eyes, Bernina is still the Rolls-Royce of machines. I have an 1130, purchased in the late 80’s, that has had thousands of hours of use, never has broken down, gets its cleaning every year or so, and will probably outlast me. Not to mention the Bernina range of presser feet, expensive but made to last a lifetime. Go to EBay and check out the prices of used Berninas; they are the only sewing machine that can be considered an investment. This is the latest compact line and every bit a Bernina.
