I’ve had the same little Home Depot special dirt devil vacuum for the last five years. It cost $50 or so, and I considered it a disposable because of the price, so I was happy to get 5 years out of it. Fact of the matter was, when the revolving brush broke two weeks ago, I wanted to go back to Home Depot and get another one just like it. Partially because of what a good little vacuum it was, partially because I had just bought two new belts for it and didn’t want them to go to waste.
Nevertheless, I’ve known for a while I was going to need a new vacuum, so my husband started looking about two months ago. He saw the Bissell Powerforce bagless and the price was right, so we both went to WalMart and picked it up…
I brought it home and put it together. Took a snap, two screws, and inserting the hose and it was ready to vacuum. Very easy to assemble, all plastic parts. More on that later.
So my first experience vacuuming with this machine was one of joy. First, it is half as loud as my old Dirt Devil. Secondly, while my Dirt Devil didn’t have a height adjustment of any kind, this one has 5 levels of height, making it a breeze to go from tile floor to shag carpet to plush, to upholstery. The switch is a little dial on the top of the base of the machine, and is easy to change, even when the machine is running.
The hose attaches to the back of the machine, about halfway up, and then to the base through a tube, also on the back, all the way down. The good thing about this is that there is a handle on the hose, and a stiff end so that you don’t have to bend down to go from upright use to using the attachments. And it is only a matter of lifting the hose out of the base tube and into an attachment, where my old dirt devil had to be twisted off the base, meaning you had to bend down to the floor. Another cool thing about it is the 2-way brush tool. One side has the brush, the other side just the plastic, and all you have to do is twist it one way or the other.
The cord is about two feet longer than my Dirt Devil, which makes it long enough to reach to the corner of the room from any outlet in it. That is also a nice change. The only thing about the cord that I don’t like is that the holder does not swivel, so you have to completely unwind it. The Dirt Devil had one half of the holder swivel so you could unwind one round and slip the coil off the holder. It was just faster, that’s all.
There is no light at the front of the vacuum, but that is not an issue for me. I don’t normally go around vacuuming in the dark.
The canister is clear plastic, which to me, is disgusting. I don’t necessarily want to look at the dirt I just vacuumed. After all, if I don’t want to see it on the floor (hence the purpose of vacuuming to begin with) why would I want to see it in the vacuum? Anyway, it is very easy to remove and empty. I recommend emptying it in the household trash because if you empty it directly in your dumpster on a slightly breezy day, you are likely to eat half of what comes out of the canister. The filter, which is washable, is also easy to remove and clean. That is a nice change for me, too. Changing the belt is a bit more complicated and requires the use of a phillips screwdriver to loosen the four screws. Even that takes little time.
The machine is blue and clear and has a nice attractive look to it. It isn’t the smallest upright I’ve seen, but it still does not take up much room. It sucks evenly from front to back and side to side. The spinning brush at the front works as effectively going backwards as forwards, making you able to vacuum on the backstroke and making the chore take less time and effort.
