I grew up with an obsessive/compulsive neat freak of a mother. Dirt and dust never has a chance in her house. My house on the other hand, could use a little bit of mom’s TLC. It’s not a pigsty by any means but, there is a “lived in” feel to it. So whenever I see a new cleaning gadget, I tend to flock towards it. It’s in the genes I guess. The Dirt Devil rechargeable Broom Vac jumped out at me and I have to say that was not one of my better impulse purchases.

The Broom Vac is shaped like a normal whisked broom. It has a foot activated on/off switch for easy use. Weighing less than 4 pounds, it aluminum and plastic construction is definitely lightweight. It has a hook on the handle that allows you to hang the Vac for easy storage. The dirt receptacle is clear so you know when to empty the dirt and dust. The Broom Vac is pretty easy to maneuver once you get the hang of it. The trick is to sweep in long flowing motions across the front of your body. Short quick strokes tend not to be effective at all. (My husband tends to use his unique pogo stick method which he claims is the only way he can get the “expletive” thing to work.)

I admit that it is great for the quick and easy pick up of daily stuff. When my son spills half a bowl of rice or cheerios on the floor it is gone in a jiffy. It is not, however, geared for intense cleaning. We have a two story house with hardwood floors and the Broom Vac always loses power before I finish “sweeping” the entire house even on a full charge. I don’t feel that I spent an exorbitant amount of time in each room so; the lack of power is disappointing. The Broom Vac is also not geared towards getting into all the little crevices of your house. Because the ideal angle needed to suction is more upright, getting the dust from under furniture is not easy.

Advertised as having more suction power than the original Broom Vac, I still felt that the system still wasn’t as powerful as I would have liked after a few uses. I soon learned that the drop in suction of the system is due to a clogged filter. If not cleaned once a week, this vac will quickly lose strength. Emptying the receptacle is not enough, you have to also clean the rotating brush to optimize power and suction.

I purchased the Broom Vac for $20 at Target. It does come with a one year parts warranty. The MBV-2030 model now comes in eight fun colors for those who have to accessorize the house like me.

All in all, the Broom Vac is good for the quick and easy clean. But, I really feel that a regular broom would have been easier for a thorough cleaning job. A regular broom can get into crevices; it’s lighter and less cumbersome.
