Dewalt DC515K Handheld Wet/Dry Vacuum

I bought this DeWalt cordless vac as a replacement for my 3rd or 4th Black & Decker DustBuster in, say, 10 years or less. Each time one of my DustBusters died, I looked for replacement batteries, and could not find any available from Black & Decker or through an aftermarket battery store. So, until now, I went out & bought another DustBuster since they were so cheap. Well, this time, I looked for a DustBuster with replaceable batteries to allow me to make better use of the hardware instead of wasting the whole unit when just the battery died. Black & Decker’s answer to this is to sell a DustBuster without a battery that costs more than the other models with batteries, and then allow you to buy not one, but two batteries separately, in addition to a battery charger (also sold separately). Ridiculous.

So, instead of continuing to support Black & Decker and their idiotic marketing scheme, I decided to try the DeWalt answer to industrial-strength cordless vacuums. The design of the DeWalt vac is different from all other cordless home vacs I’ve found or used thus far in that it incorporates a single-unit handheld vac that operates in a similar fashion to others, such as the DustBuster and Shark, with a compact wet/dry vac with a hose that allows for standard shop vac attachments. The other trait that sets the DeWalt apart from others is its interchangeable, rechargeable NiCad 18V battery which works with many of DeWalt’s other cordless tools. The DeWalt vac employs a pleated, cylindrical HEPA filter, which is able to be used to clean up dry or wet messes, and which is able to be easily washed for extended life. The dust bin detaches from the rear easily using a modern toolbox style latch.

Performance-wise, the suction is definitely better than any DustBuster, and the flexibility of the 2′ rubberized stretch hose which detaches from the main front nozzle allows you to clean in tight spots, as well as use attachments like a brush or crevice tool. Something I’ve not yet tried, but plan to very soon, is to use the vac to clean out my car, utilizing a couple attachments to maximize its functionality. I’ve done my own non-scientific test of the battery life on this machine, and by charging the battery to full capacity, then turning it on & letting it sit in the garage until the sound of it suddenly dropped down, I can say it runs for approximately 20 continuous minutes. This is far better than I’ve seen reported about any other cordless vac, and I’m sure the total time would increase with rest periods between uses. DeWalt recommends leaving the battery on the charger between uses, which allows the charger to condition the battery & keep a maintenance charge on it indefinitely.

I’ve owned the vac for about a week now, and I’m pleased with its performance and value for the price. I expect this may be the last cordless vac I have to buy… at least for another 10-20 years.

What’s in the box: Vacuum unit, 18V NiCad battery, DeWalt battery charger.
