I recently renovated the main living area of my home, changing out carpeting in the living room, dining room, sewing room and the hallway to the bedrooms for wood laminate. I didn’t like the film left behind on the new floors by my Swiffer Wet Jet, although I’d been fine with it in my tiled front hall and kitchen.
I decided to look into steam mops, and after reading the reviews here on epinions, I decided on the Bissell Steam Mop.
The first thing I really liked about the Bissell Steam Mop is that it was very easy to assemble. There are instructions and they’re clearly written, but even without them, it wouldn’t have taken much time to figure out what went where. It also went together pretty easily.
Because of the reviews here, I knew ahead of time to use distilled water, and had already purchased some. I wasn’t entirely sure where to buy replacement parts, like a new filter, although I later found them on the Bissell Company webpage (bissell.com), so I wanted to make the one I got last as long as possible.
After sweeping my living and dining rooms thoroughly, I decided to put the mop to the test. I was happily impressed with how well it cleaned. There is a place right by the cat food bowls that is always just a bit greasy from the cats grabbing a mouthful of kibble and then walking just into the living room, dropping the kibble on the floor and then eating it one piece at a time. The Bissell Steam Mop made very short work of that! It also cleaned the rest of the floor very nicely.
The water tank is a perfect size for my condo–I can do all the hard floors in the condo without refilling the tank (about 900 square feet total, once the carpeted areas are subtracted out). The mop heated up quickly so it was ready for use easily within the 30 seconds the instructions mentioned. And I love that there’s no chemical cleaner smell when I’m done.
There were some down sides. It did leave more water on the floors than I expected, and left to dry on its own, the water left obvious spots on my wood laminate floors (although the tile floors were fine). Also, because of the heat and steam/water on the mop head, you don’t want to stand the mop upright on the laminate and just leave it. Usually I just carry it to the tile surface if I need to leave it stand. And to avoid the water spots on the wood laminate, I just go over the floors afterwards with a microfiber cloth attached to my basic Swiffer sweeper head. The cloth dries the floor very well. It’s kind of a hassle, but not enough of one to make me dislike the mop.
I, too, wish the cord were longer, but I just try to find ‘midway’ plugs. But I’m in a 1,250 sq ft condo–in a larger house this might be a lot more annoying. I’d recommend a similarly rated extension cord to give the mop more range for those who have large spaces.
Bottom Line: It’s a great little mop. It’s not The Perfect™ little mop. But it’s got more pros than cons, in my opinion.
