After thoroughly researching front-loading washers and dryers, I went with my husband to the store on Boxing Day hoping for some great deals. We had chosen a Bosch set for our purchase, but once we got to the store, the salesperson pushed the LG on us. It was greatly reduced in price and he promised we would be so happy because the LG had a larger capacity for a larger family like ours.
Yes, it looks pretty high-tech - has lots of features and an amazing digital display, but we were very disappointed when we started to use the washer. Our clothes really weren’t that clean, in fact our clothes were just as clean with our 11-year-old top-loading Sears model that we just replaced. I expected a lot more from a product that had so many customized cycles, was supposed to clean better because it was front-loading (water is pushed through the clothes) and is able to heat the water within the unit to a higher temperature than most water heaters.
Here a list of problems we encountered:
*High noise level and vibration from the unit being unbalanced even though our set was professionally installed and leveled. Front-loaders spin at very high speeds so they must be properly leveled.
*Extremely long wash cycles - sometimes more than 90 minutes. This made doing several loads on the same day very difficult. Unlike other machines, this washer actually takes longer to wash than the dryer takes to dry.
*Our clothes were not noticeably cleaner than our old washer, even though the LG had optional stain cycle, soil level settings and in-unit water heating to customize the load.
*Mildew and smells were a problem unless the door was left open between uses. This was particularly difficult because our washer was by a back entrance to our house and the open washer door would crash up against the exit door.
I would also like to mention that this model doesn’t allow the filter to be cleaned easily and because of this flaw, lint build-up floated back down into the motor and caused a burn-out. It was fixed under warrantee however, but there is no reason to believe it would be a consistent problem long after the warrantee is expired.
On the positive side:
*This washer is sleek and stylish looking, with a lot of customizable features.
*I like using the front-load washer for the environmental benefits, such as using less water, electricity and soap. However, I think other brands and models may do a better job since so many have rave reviews.
