Great Refrigerator, but does have a bad side! Maytag MFI2568AES Stainless Steel (25 cu. ft.) Bottom Freezer French Door Refrigerator We brought this refrigerator in May of 2006. We were building a house and ...

I bought this refrigerator in October 2006 so I have been using it for almost two years. All-in-all it is not a bad refrigerator but I did not have to deal with Maytag’s customer service which seems to be one of the major complaints of the other reviewers, although Maytag now no longer owns the brand. I did check out their website for recalls and service bulletins and I was not impressed with it or the way it works for such a large company.
I replaced a 17 year old refrigerator with this unit and was impressed by the fact that not only is it 22% bigger than my old refrigerator (internal volume) but it’s also 23% more efficient. I assumed that it would be a lot quieter than my old refrigerator especially since Maytag advertised it as using their super quiet silentII (or something like that) motor. This refrigerator is not quiet, but seeing how none of the other reviewers even mentioned it maybe I’m expecting too much. The heat exchange fan and the compressor run quietly but this refrigerator has several fans in it. The one inside, in the back, at about the height of the top of the bottom freezer door runs very fast and sounds like a turbo prop. When it turns off their is instant silence in my house and sometimes I even turn-down the volume on the TV. Oddly, that’s where I really noticed the noise, in the family room while watching TV, not while I’m in the kitchen. I wish they would have designed it with a larger diameter fan blade so that it could run at a much slower speed and still move the required amount of air. This refrigerator also runs a lot. Mine runes about 50% of the time but according to Maytag’s website that’s normal and they will run between 40% to 80% depending on factors like humidity and outside temperature.
The same “noisy” fan mentioned above also started causing the refrigerator body or panels to vibrate after I had owned it for 8 months. It was a very annoying vibrations and drove me nuts when it would vibrate. Opening and closing the freezer door, moving or shaking it, etc. would stop it. Once I found out what was causing it I placed a piece of rubber (one of my flip-flops) on the back panel where the vibration originated from and gave it several hard whacks with the palm of my hand which cured the problem. Apparently it moved the fan over enough so that it wasn’t touching anything.
Other than the noise and the vibration problem I haven’t had any of the issues that the other reviewers wrote about. It cools very well, I actually had to turn it up from 37 degrees (default factory setting) to 41 degrees when I first got it because I wasn’t use to everything being so cold. I’ve since settled on 39 degrees. The things that attracted me to this model, besides it bigger size, was the bottom freezer and the internal layout. I also liked the fact that two of the bins on the inside of the door were wide enough to hold one gallon milk containers. The freezer on the bottom and the refrigerator on the top sure is handy and really makes a lot of sense, I’m puzzled as to why they didn’t catch on until recently. The French doors look nice and are more convenient than one large door but not that big of a deal. As it turned out, the bins on the inside door of my old refrigerator held more jars and items than the new ones so I use the wide milk bins for jars too and just put the milk on one of the shelves. The butter compartment on the upper left door is way to big and the space should have been put to better use like for more jars! There is no special compartment or place for eggs. The water/ice filter is fantastic. I don’t even like water but this is some of the best tasting water I have ever drank. It reminds me of the water up north in the mountains. The temperature controlled pullout meat drawer is quiet large but the fruit and vegetable drawers are too small, especially the veggie drawer. There is plenty of room in the bottom freezer but I wish it had a third pullout drawer or bin like in some of the other brands I looked at, it looks like there would have been room to do so.
