In my 40 plus years of appliance ownership, I have never experienced a failure rate similar to that with items produced by Electrolux the parent company of Frigidaire. I will not bore the reader with details of previous issues since this evaluation is centered around refrigeration, particularly the FRT18 series.
When it comes right down to it there is very little difference between various top mount models in the 18 cu. ft. category. Options include glass shelves and or an icemaker which came with the model we purchased. Every refrigerator comes with a freezer and a larger section for keeping fresh foods cold. Consequently purchase decisions are often based on interior features like space on the door or the size of a freezer which can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. But many times the choice is simply a matter of price. I will admit to falling into that category when I selected this particular refrigerator.
Aside from the fact we encountered an immediate failure of the icemaker upon delivery, which by the way took three weeks to repair, the refrigerator worked as expected. Glass shelves were appreciated as they help to contain spills from dripping on items below. See through crispers make viewing items stored within a simple matter of opening the refrigerator door. Of lesser importance door shelves were not adjustable and the glass shelves had minimal adjustments. With a refrigerator of this size there is only so much adjustment you could make any way. Operation of the box was quiet and the temperature adjustment worked well. The freezer section did its job as did the refrigeration section.
While I was unhappy it took three weeks to get the icemaker repaired I was nevertheless pleased with the refrigerator and continued to be for a little over three years. True the construction seemed rather flimsy but the unit worked and that was all one could expect. However the flimsy construction has a price which ultimately ended in a complete failure of the sealed system.
I was able to determine we had a sealed system failure which was covered under the warranty even though the refrigerator was then almost 4 years old. I immediately called Electrolux to try and get the unit serviced under the warranty. Electrolux gave me the name of three different service agents, all refused to come to my home! I kept making phone calls until I was eventually able to get an authorized servicer to look at the refrigerator.
I called Electrolux back after the authorized service agent had condemned the refrigerator. Electrolux wasn’t that receptive and suggested I call another service agent, when I refused due to the previous response I got from these same agents they offered me a rebate of 20%. Who would accept that on an appliance that was still under warranty?
After continued discussion that exceeded a dozen phone calls and probably four hours of phone time, Electrolux finally agreed to replace the refrigerator under the warranty. It seemed the entire procedure was purposely designed to irritate the customer in hopes the caller would give up and just purchase a new refrigerator. As of this writing I have been promised a new refrigerator with a delivery date of one month from my first phone call to Electrolux.
