This is a portable 18 inch dishwasher. I selected this model because it had a stainless steel tub, and after some research it seemed that dishwashers with steel tubs are better. I picked sears because they deliver, and their appliances are generally affordable and reliable.
The service from sears was awful. In most cases, I wouldn%26rsquo;t describe the service unless I was reviewing a store, but Kenmore products can only be bought from Sears. When I made the order over the internet they refused to let me choose or change the delivery date. I was forced to take time off work, despite the fact that I had the next day off. The delivery people did not unpack the dishwasher or show me how to hook it up to the sink. I was later told that this service cost $10, but it wasn%26rsquo;t offered.
It was not hard to unpack, but hooking it up was something else. You have to change the sink faucet aerator to fit the connector. The inlet and outlet hoses fit into a hole in the back. The connector screws onto hoses very easily. The first time I attempted to hook the connector to the sink, a white rubber ring pop out. Only I thought that it popped off. So, I slipped it on the outside of the part that connects to the sink. Then when I tried to turn the water on, it shot up in the air. I eventually called sears and they offered to mail a new connector, but they wouldn%26rsquo;t send anyone out for two weeks. The white ring kept popping off, and at some point I realized that the ring went inside. I was able to get the connector to work. This took about 2.5 hours. The diagrams in the handbook were not detailed and very little help. The connector can drip quite a bit while the dishwasher operates. It will spray sometimes and may need to be adjusted several times, before it will work. I once had a washing machine with a plastic sink connector. They are cheap, but they can be replaced with a metal one at a plumbing supply store. Once I was able to connect the hoses, the dishwasher was able to fill with water and operate normally.
Description
This dishwasher is 18%26rdquo; wide, and is the height and depth of my kitchen counters. Mine is black all over. The top is black matt plastic, and the front and sides are black metal. It has two racks inside and is advertised as holding 10 place settings. I don%26rsquo;t have 10 place settings. It seems to fit a lot for its width. One thing I like is that there are two spray arms to equally clean the top and bottom. The top spray arm is attached to the top racks and takes away little or no space from the lower rack. There is a filter in the bottom that prevents food from going into the outlet hose. The lower rack can come out, so you can easily access the filter. There is a removable silver way basket. This basket has two lids with holes that clip on top. If you drop the handles of the silver in the holes, it keeps them separate. I find that it works best to take one lid off for larger items. The top rack has a cup shelf that folds down on the right side. This allows you to fit in an extra row of very short items. I think it would be more accurate to call it the ramekin shelf.
Control Panel
The control panel is along the top front, as you would expect. It has a Cycle Dial on the right side and four buttons on the left for the hot water and heated drying options. The latch is centered on the bottom of the control panel. There is a vent on the upper left corner. The controls are easy to understand. The buttons control the temperature of the wash water, and the drying. This washer can heat the wash water to 140 degrees. This is one of the biggest advantages over hand washing, and I always use it. If the water coming in is cold, this will delay the wash cycle as the machine will wait until the water heats to 140. The heated drying operation is very intense and should be turned off if you have a lot of plastics in the wash.
Actually Use
I have found that this machine does an excellent job of cleaning my dishes. It is somewhat humiliating to notice how much cleaner the dishes are then when I was hand washing. Dishes do not have to be rinsed, but you need to make sure that excessive bits of food are removed because it does not have a disposal. One negative thing is that I have found dishes are somewhat soapy and need one more rinse cycle to be clean. The heavy wash takes 143 minutes on heavy wash. With the extra rinse this more than 2 and half hours to clean a load of dishes. I believe that it is not good for the plastic tubing to leave this connected to the sink, so I don%26rsquo;t feel comfortable running it unless I going to be around when it ends. It has never leaked, but I get paranoid about leaving it alone.
It is pretty loud. From what I have read, most portable dishwashers are much louder than built in dishwashers.
It is heavy but rolls easily.
This model is more expensive than some of the full size portable washers, but they have plastic tubs. I only run it two or three times a week, so I think it is the right size for me.
Overall
I have used this dishwasher for 2 and half months and I am happy that I bought it. It is much better than washing dishes by hand. As my brother pointed out, even when you don%26rsquo;t run it every day you can hide the dirty dishes inside. It is the first dishwasher I have owned, so it is difficult for me to compare. I think this washer has good and bad points.
