My Big White Fridge

I purchased the Kenmore Elite 75544 French Door Refrigerator despite reading some negative reviews on opinion boards. The fact is, some of these models are Kenmore and some are Kenmore Elite and I think reviews can be skewed. Keeping up with specific models within the line can be confusing.

I believe the Elite series has far fewer issues. My neighbor’s Kenmore was not an Elite, but looked just like mine without the in-door water feature, and it had to be replaced due to a bad motor less than 3 weeks of delivery. I’ve had no issues with this massive fridge and enjoy the efficiency in space and design it has delivered so far. It is also extremely quiet when the fan turns on. I’m unsure of how energy efficient this model is but it is energy star rated and has to be better than my old 1988 Hotpoint!

From the bottom up, this unit has wonderful features. I love having the freezer at the bottom! Unlike other French door units, the Kenmore Elite has a full basket, as opposed to a wire basket on which to lay your frozen items on. No ice shreds falling to the floor! Another small, tilt- able wire basket runs the length of the freezer door for smaller items, and the door can be opened by merely a pull and tilt motion. You do not have to pull the entire freezer door open to get to the majority of freezer items. Wonderful! When the ice maker is on, it can overfill if you don’t manually stop the maker. Some have complained about the cubes falling into the back of the freezer. I don’t worry about cubes falling because I turn my ice maker off before it gets too full. Oh, and you have ice cube size choices of small, medium or large. Why anyone cares about cube size is unknown to me, but to each his own.

This model has adjustable shelving on both the left and right French doors. I love the dividers in the doors which separate my gallon jugs! How absolutely logical! The crispers are large and deep, but I do think the blue plastic air vents look and feel cheap. The large pull out drawer which claims to hold a platter full of food is very deep and wide. We use it to store bottles and there is A LOT of room in that very handy space. I’ve placed large platters for the holidays in that space and have gotten positive comments from guests about the genie effect the drawer has. It looks insignificant until you pull it open, then ‘wow’, you have all this extra room. Above the platter drawer is the main interior of the refrigerator providing many ways to customize the location of your 4 pull out shelves.

Since getting this good sized refrigerator, it looks like we need food! The sightlines are high so if you’re short like me at 5′4 the top shelving might best be suited for rarely used items. Another ergonomic thought is that this fridge is excellent for someone who may be in a wheelchair. A family member, after seeing this unit, purchased one for herself and her ease of getting to ice, freezer items and the interior works well with her limited mobility in the chair.

This model has an in the door water feature with a touch screen control panel for lighting and temperature. I was hesitant on this feature only because digital panels have a history of causing issues with operational portions of appliances, but so far so good, or we’ve been real lucky. It was a great purchase and I look forward to it for many years.
