I have had my new Whirlpool Gold Refrigerator with French Doors, for around a month and it is high time I did a review and display my regrets. My husband suggested this type of refrigerator with the doors, the water dispenser on the inside, the freezer in the draw in the bottom of the unit and an ice maker that simply drops the ice into an old ordinary ice box.
I was very skeptical in the beginning, but now that I am use to it I find it much easier to use than a side by side or freezer on the top model. I also have never owned a Whirlpool product before. I don’t even think I have looked at one until my husband showed me this one. It is nice looking and practical and I feel comfortable with the product.
Features and my thoughts
-Smooth Door (We opted for the brushed stainless that prevents fingerprints and it totally works)
-7.3 Cu. Ft. Freezer Compartment Volume (Looks are deceiving…The freezer has tons of storage)
-24.8 Cu. Ft. Total Capacity (Plenty large enough)
-Internal Water Dispenser (Makes the outside of the fridge looks so much more sleek, without the water and ice dispenser on the outside. It is a little awkward because you have to hold the door open with your left shoulder, hold the cup under the dispenser with one hand and push the water control with the other.)
-Digital Temperature Control (Very convenient and there are suggested temperatures from Whirlpool for you.)
-4 Slide-Out Spillproof Shelves (Very easy to clean and put back into place.)
-2 Humidity-Controlled Crispers (My favorite component! You can control the humidity on two different crispers for very different vegetables. You can have leafy greens on one side and cucumbers and avocado on the other.)
-1 Dairy Compartment (You have a dairy drawer and also another temperature controlled pantry for deli meat and cheese, so there is plenty of storage there.)
-1 Clear Full-Width Framed Temperature-Controlled Pantry
-Wine Rack (…that you can use as another soft drink storage or tall bottles.)
-3 Clear Standard Door Bins
-2 Clear Gallon Bins with Blue Mats
-2 Slide-Out Freezer Baskets (Easy to access and full of storage. They are very deep in size.)
-Factory Installed Automatic Ice Maker (We had to buy an ice scoop. Not included)
***Unfortunately this refrigerator is not energy compliant***
In the End
I was initially concerned about the “new” configuration to my usual refrigerators. I was afraid I would have enough storage, etc. Now that I have used it, I am use to the way the shelves are configured and the placement of the drawers.
About storage - the only problem I have is the lack of storage for tall items. The largest apple juice jugs do not fit on the door or the shelf that is “made for” those types of containers. When the shelves are relocated to try and fix this problem, you lose a shelf in the big scheme of things.
I have found the Whirlpool model to be very durable, since now that the ice is available to my four year old (with the bottom freezer); he is using the appliance more. I do feel the fridge makes a weird little hum noise every once in a while and at times when the ice drops into the box it scares me to death. This isn’t terrible unless it is quiet in the house and I am sitting next to it.
About the water - it tastes very good and is very clear. But remember the odd way I said I have to hold the door to get the water…When you finish getting the water you want, remember to hold the container under the dispenser an extra second or the water will drip when you pull the cup away. Also, you may want to angle the glass to counter this action.
All in all I feel that we made the right decision and that this refrigerator is the one for us for the moment. It looks and operates really well and I look forward to seeing the way it holds up in the future for more updates here on epinions.
