Nearly four years ago, my parents purchased a new model 085575, or the “Jaguar” variant of Royal’s Dirt Devil FeatherLite series (Target store specific), and it has worked mostly well since the fall of 2004. It has been used every week since, with some of those weeks I had to vacuum when I was over, I even did the low-tech repairs when needed.

Features:

The 12 Amp motor is the typical industry standard found on many vacuums nowadays, however in this particular model, it is quite loud (well, very loud). The power head automatically adapts to the carpet pile, without manually adjusting it. Typical-in-this-segment on board hose, crevice tool, extension wand, and upholstery brush. 12-volt headlamp (size 906, automotive), 20+’ cord with convenience rotating hook storage, hard bag chamber with washable emissions filter round out its features.

What is loved about this vacuum cleaner:

This machine picks up quite a bit (usual crumbs, etc.) along with slight edge-cleaning, and the suction is never lost when the dust bag is near full. The belts are less likely to wear out as quickly as competing models, and is easily accessible for replacement. This machine uses inexpensive dust bags and belts, third-party brands are usually at $0.75 to $1.00/each. Handle does not flex much, and the foot-activated power switch is placed in an ideal spot. The color this model is of non-offensive red and black, design is identical to the other basic FeatherLite variants found in other colors like lavender, beige, black, among others.

What is not-so-loved about this vacuum cleaner:

Thin vacuum tool connector to the power head has an awkward twist-connect design which had managed to develop cracks after two years of use. Both power cord wraps fail, the top rotating hook had broken its clip and had to be glued back, the bottom hook bent quite a bit. The handle release somehow went off track a few times, but was fixed by pushing the lever towards the power head. These, to me, are considered usual wear and tear, but can be quite annoying for some owners.

The motor noise is irritating, noticeably louder than a Bissell PowerForce 3525 (same price range) that replaced it. It could be better designed to reduce excessive noise and maintain suction power.

Decision:

The FeatherLite series, including this store-specific “Jaguar” variant, is competent for one to three years of use, if you are past the intended useful period, the FeatherLite series may have its features fall apart. Some of the vacuum’s components, like the hose, are prime examples of cost-cutting. For the usual consumables, it’s rather inexpensive for the whole duration, but the competition most definitely surpassed the FeatherLite series, especially at the under $60 price range.
