When I lived outside Chicago , a good number of my appliances were gas. Since that time, I have migrated towards electric. Although my Whirlpool Double Oven is electric, my Whirlpool Cooktop is gas. It is the only gas appliance in my home (my clothes dryer and oven are both electric). I’m not certain how I ended up with a gas cooktop, but I like it. The black finish of the GLT3057RB provides a nice compliment to my granite counters and stainless steel and black appliances.

If you are not familiar with Induction cooking it is very popular in Europe and I have been told the Sears unit is made by Electrolux. The unit I received was made in Canada.

Induction cooking requires steel pots and pans. If a magnet will stick to the bottom of the pot it will work. Pots that are also made with Aluminum and have multiple plies will work best.

You can take a towel and lay it down on the cooktop then add a pan and it works fine catches spills easily.

In 6 months of use, we’ve found this cooktop exceeds our expectations.

Buying Decision

We basically like our current kitchen layout and did not want to remodel. However, we did not like the appliances and have been upgrading over the years. One of our earliest upgrades was from an electric to gas cooktop. Unfortunately, we chose a hard to clean model with low burner BTU output and were somewhat disappointed.

Recently we decided to upgrade to a unit that more closely fits our lifestyle: We especially like stir frying in our Wok.

BACKGROUND

If you’ve seen a couple of my other reviews on Thermador, you know that I just moved into a new home that came with the total Thermador package including this built in stainless steel 4-Burner Gas Range with center Griddle. Of all the package, I think this one is definitely worth the money.

OVERVIEW

I bought this cooktop because, as part of a remodel, I was looking for a 36″ gas cooktop with 5 or 6 burners.

I was trying to match the layout of my old cooktop where the controls were in a line across the front rather than bunched together in a corner or along the right edge.

I was also attracted to the advertisement and the salesman’s pitch that this model has a great low simmer — always a problem with my old cooktop.

I saw this cooktop as the featured item in a mail-order kitchen supply catalog and absolutely had to have one. I have firsthand experience with a full-size Viking gas range and trusted their quality from what I had seen, which led me to part with the $500 for what I assumed was a quality item.
