This has been one of those emotional buys rather than planned. Yet, we’re happy as we can be and sometime a good value doesn’t have to be cheap. Blame the “leap year sales” if you must, but it was the main reason for extending our search to this model. At the offered price of $1800, this was a great deal compared to the $2700 MSRP. But price isn’t everything and this particular model from GE has a few features that may make it worthwhile — though not essential.
IN A NUTSHELL

We upgraded to our GE Refrigerator when we moved and have found it to be a solid, consumer-friendly, and attractive appliance for its price.

We almost didn’t get this fridge. In fact, I hadn’t really even heard of Electrolux when we began shopping. Usually I do a lot of online research before ANY purchase….and this time I’m happy to say that I made an exception.
Let me preface my review of the product by giving you a little background on my situation. I am completely renovating a kitchen in a home that I just moved into. The old one had no appliances and was so trashed I wouldn’t even consider it salvage-able. One of the big items on my to-do list was to buy all new appliances for the kitchen. Being an avid cook…I’ve got some pretty high standards for my appliances to meet.

I purchased this refrigerator in July 2008 from HH Gregg at the insistence of the salesperson. She said it was the best on the market and at $2650 less tax it certainly was the most expensive they sold. Due to kitchen remodeling, we didnt take delivery until August 23, 2008.
My first impression was very favorable. The fit and finish are like a Lexus! The drawers move quietly and the doors seal like a bank vault and it is HUGE. It is so big, it almost didn’t fit in the space where our 15 year old Kitchenaid 26 ft came out of. The Wave Touch controls are easy to use and the deep blue LED temp displays are very classy and, as it unfortunately turned out, a neccesity.

If you haven’t noticed, Side by Side refrigerator/freezer combinations have gained a measure of popularity lately. Stainless steel appointments, especially, add an upscale looking element that strikes a chord with consumers, a trend that manufacturers seem to be building market share on.
In our business we like to equip units with those appointments that are commensurate with the current market and we have found, time and again, that GE has a line of appliances that suit the demographic we market to with features, dependability, appearance, and value.
Recently after an unsuccessful shopping trip to our scratch & dent reseller, we went to another supplier and struck a deal on the GE GSHS5KGXSS Side By Side.
The fridge I had was a Kenmore that I bought in 1999. Lately, it seemed like it was running incessantly, and wasn’t as cold as it should be. Worried that I would be receiving an electric bill large enough to subsidize the CEO’s annual bonus, I started shopping for a replacement.
The first good thing I learned was that the government requirements for Energy Star compliance had been raised in 2003, and again in 2008. This meant that if I found something that met current Energy Star requirements, I would be looking at a reduction in energy usage of nearly 50% for my refrigeration needs. So, I started my quest.

GE Side by Side 29.5 CF Refrigerator
I recently bought this refrigerator based on the sale price. The price was reasonable for a large refrigerator and the features that it includes are nice to have and they make reaching food in the back easy.
This refrigerator is large. I like the slide out glass shelves. They are easy to clean and they make getting to items in the back of the refrigerator easy. Even items on the lower shelves are easily accessible with the slide out shelf option.

We bought our Kenmore about 4 years ago to replace a Frigidaire that was only 8 years old, but we needed a larger appliance for our family. We were just in awe of the cavernous space in the refrigerator section of this unit. It has glass shelves that can hold quite a bit of spilled liquid without leaking (lots of experience here). The shelves can be easily repositioned and take up very little of the interior space in and of themselves. The freezer section is good, but the ice maker does take up quite a bit of space.
