This is a review of my parents refrigerator and I have to say I pretty much hate it. Don’t get me wrong, it has that “cool” factor and it’s really an unusual and striking design, but it doesn’t function as well as the fridge it replaced and considering the side-by-side bisque Kenmore it replaced was probably 15 years old or so, I think that is unacceptable. This Samsung refrigerator is huge. It takes up a lot of space, we even had to shave a bit off the cabinets that sit atop the fridge and take the molding off the doorway to get it to fit. But the other model we wanted was even bigger so this is what we ended up with. The irony is that the old fridge worked perfectly well and I liked a lot of things about it. My dad on the other hand constantly complained about having to dig to reach things in the fridge and the freezer because side-by-side models are all about what can fit depth-wise, not width-wise. A pizza box would fit but it would be rather snug. The freezer was the main issue because we’d have to dig through frozen food to reach the frozen food item we were looking for. I didn’t think it was that bad but it was an issue. So, my hope was to get more internal space. Well, enter the Samsung model that takes up more external space than our old Kenmore, and it ironically had even less interior space than the Kenmore. If you’re with me still, it took up more space in the kitchen but provided less space than the smaller fridge did. That’s logical right? The old ice maker in our old fridge filled inside a bin that was easily accessible and pulled out, while the Samsung comes through the door, utilizing precious freezer door space, and it has a fresh water feature in the door. We live in the country and have well water that tastes fine so the whole water from the door feature wasn’t a big selling point. If anything, it was a con for us. The ice maker is louder than our old one and it makes fewer cubes. As for the fridge part, I miss having a vegetable bin and a meat/coldcut drawer. The separate bin beneath the fridge door is just a waste of space. And to top it off, sometimes we find that there is water in the fridge and our milk seems to spoil before the expiration date. With our old fridge, milk always made it to the expiration date, and now it is bad a week or more before the date now. Either all the milk from all the different stores I’ve tried is being mishandled or the fridge just plain stinks at doing it’s job of actually keeping things cool. I also hate the computer function on the fridge. Give me the standard features any day. What a waste of money. I would highly recommend anyone considering this fridge research as much as you can and read as many reviews as possible. If I knew then what I know now I can guarantee you we’d have either kept our old fridge or gone with a Kenmore.
