I have been sewing for 40 years and am considered to be a sewing expert. Before buying my first Janome, I had a top of the line Kenmore for 27 years that I used until the foot control (it’s what you step on to make the machine go) went out, summer of 2003. Since my machine was outdated, I could not find a replacement for the foot control and I went shopping for a new machine. I found the Janome Harmony 8080 on sale and since I wanted a computerized machine (the first computerized machine I used or owned), I bought it. I took it home and it only took about a half hour to set it up and figure out how to use it, which was a relief since I had to go to classes to learn how to use my Kenmore machine.
What I love about my Janome is not only how easy it is to use, how beautiful and perfect the buttonholes come out, but that you can change your choice of decorative stitches with the touch of a button while you are stitching a line of decorative stitching (combining stitches)! You were not able to do that with the Kenmore I had since it was not computerized and the decorative stitches were on cams.
There are 50 stitches on this machine with a LED display that lights up the stitch number you are using, the stitch width, and the stitch length. You also get the standard spool holder on the top of the machine with an additional small spool holder, which is great when using a double needle. The machine comes in it’s own case, unlike some machines you have to buy a case for, and a very easy to follow sewing machine owner’s manual. This is a free arm machine which allows you to remove the extension table that has an accessory box, so you can sew small garment areas like cuffs, sleeves, and so on. There is also a automatic needle threader (which I absolutely love) and a thread cutter on the machine. It has your standard needle tension dial, bobbin winding spindle, and handwheel. There is a sewing speed control button, which I never used or had before, but I love and use all of the time. You can also drop the feed dogs for free motion stitching. The feet snap on and off and the feet that come with the machine are: straight stitch foot; zigzag foot; satin stitch foot; zipper foot; automatic buttonhole foot; overcasting foot; blind hem foot and walking foot with quilter bar. There are additional feet that can be purchased and I have purchased and use the cording foot, pin-tuck foot, and embroidery foot that can be used for free motion stitching. The machine also comes with 3 bobbin spools; assorted needle set; light bulb; seam ripper; screwdriver; oil; lint brush; foot control and all your spool holder attachments.
This machine will sew any fabric–from the most light weight to the heaviest denim as long as you use the correct needle size, thread type and weight, and have the tension set correctly. The only two problems I have had with the machine in the last 5 years is that my satin foot already broke, but it is made out of plastic, not metal like the rest of the feet, and that I have trouble keeping my presser foot lifter in the up position (it’s what holds the pressure foot up so you can slide fabric under the foot to sew). It does not always stay up when I want it to and I asked my husband if it could be fixed or replaced and he said it could not (I’m married to Mr. Fix It). So until I’m ready to buy a new machine, preferably one that has over 100 decorative stitches, I will put up with this small problem. Since this machine is so easy to use, even a sewing novice could handle a machine like this.
