Meco Walk-A-Bout Charcoal Grill

We’re not much for change here on Spud Acres. The missus and me are just fine with our black and white console television and the rooftop antenna. Maybe one day I’ll buy one of them VCR’s so’s we can rent movies from the Bookbusters store in town. On a summer’s day aint’ nothing like rocking on the metal glider on the front porch or lying in the backyard hammock with a sweatin’ glass of iced tea while keepin’ one eye on the chicken legs and spuds cooking on the charcoal grill. None of those gas grill contraptions for us. I knowed a woman whose back porch burnt down cause of one of them gas grills. I did finally give in and get me what they call a chimney starter from Weber. It’s sure a lot faster than starting a fire with the flintrock. And now we finally got us a new grill too ‘cause the bottom of the old one was mostly rusted out.

Aussie Charcoal Grill by Meco

They had a bunch of these grills on sale at Home Depot last year for 25 dollars. We didn’t need a grill back then, but it was such a good deal I bought one and kept it in the shed over the winter. They call this grill a Walk-a-Bout. I guess it’s because there’s two wheels on it, and after you fold up the legs you can walk around with it, pullin’ it by the handle. I walked about Home Depot for a bit with one, and it rolled kinda nice. Finally I got tired of walkin’ around with it and bought it.

Features:

Some of these might come in a box. I took mine off the top of the pile at Home Depot.

100% pre-assembled

333 square inches of cooking area

Portable with easy rolling wheels (two of them)

Hood and bowl lock for walking around and storage

Chrome plated cooking grid – two height positions

Fire grate/ash dump to prevent bottom burn out. Lifts out for easy cleaning.

Efficient draft system – three adjustable vents on back, front, and top of lid

Cooking grid has handles for lifting and raised feet on the bottom. It says you can lift the whole thing and carry it inside to put on a table or countertop.

Made in the USA

Chrome plated, handled, footed cooking grill made in China

Cookin’ Up a Storm

A storm always seems to creep up every time I fire up the grill so it’s nice that this one has a lid on it, which helps as long as it doesn’t rain too hard. It only took a few minutes to set up the grill. Just had to figure out how to lock the legs in place and unlock the lid. (Meco calls it a hood.) I read the directions afterwards and seem to have done everything right. I’ve been writing down some things I thought about when using this grill and saved it for this review. Here’s a bit of what I wrote about my Meco.

This grill doesn’t have an attached side table like my old one. I really miss my side kick. A couple times I dropped some chicken pieces on the deck thinking the table was there. But I mostly remember now.

The vents slide real smoothly and control the draft and temperature well. They really do help when the grill gets cooking too hot or you need to put out some flames. Yes, they do slide easily, but these vents don’t seem to close as tightly as on the old grill. I like to smother the fire so I can reuse some of the charcoal the next time. That ain’t gonna happen on this grill. Not only are the vents loosey goosey, but there’s twelve holes in the bottom bowl. I’m not sure why. Maybe they’re for add ons. I plan to plug up those holes with some stove bolts one of these days to put those brickets out.

The stay cool handle gets kinda warm. You don’t need a glove to open the “hood”, but you don’t wanna hold on to the handle too long either.

You can change the height of the cooking grid if you grab it by the handles and reposition it in different slots. Make a note to keep some kitchen mitts nearby if you’re thinking about moving that grid.

The grill looks nice and shiny sitting out on the deck. Wonder how long it’ll look that way.

Food on the grill cooks up pretty fast.

The fire grate/ash dump lifts out easy enough, and all the ashes fall out when you turn it over. It washes off with a garden hose, but mostly I’ll be dumpin’ and skipping the hose part.

Finally - For $25 I can’t complain too much about this grill. Had I paid full price, I wouldn’t be too satisfied with it.

Addendumb From the owner’s manual: “ Using long handled tongs and barbecue mitts, spread the charcoal out over the Fire Grate/Ash Pan. Leave about one half inch of space between each piece of charcoal.” Above these directions is a photo of charcoal briquettes laid out in a perfectly symmetrical seven by seven grid, forty nine chunks of charcoal positioned perfectly. I’m happy just to keep most of the charcoal on the ash pan.
