Fast and fun Kenmore 42800 Stainless Steel Electric Cooktop If you are not familiar with Induction cooking it is very popular in Europe...

I saw this cooktop as the featured item in a mail-order kitchen supply catalog and absolutely had to have one. I have firsthand experience with a full-size Viking gas range and trusted their quality from what I had seen, which led me to part with the $500 for what I assumed was a quality item.
The stove arrived perfectly and looked even better than in the pictures. This, however, led to the first error on my part which was not owning any induction compatible cookware. After then investing in new pots and pans, I began using the cooktop for a few months. Aside from the minor “vibration” noise that comes from induction use while heating, this thing was amazing. Instant heat, precise temperature control, and little power usage made me not think twice about the purchase. At this point I was recommending Viking to my entire family and anyone who would listen.
Just after 1 year (right after expiration of the warranty) the unit stopped working completely. No lights, no fan, no heat. Hoping it was a simple fuse, I called Viking who referred me to a local authorized center for repair. I took the unit in and, after a few days, received word that the fuse was actually blown but it was repeatedly blowing out whenever a new one was inserted. After further investigation, the repairman told me that two of the three circuit boards inside were damaged beyond repair and the cost on ONE board alone was over $500!! It appears that the internal heatsink wasn’t absorbing enough heat from the controllers during use and they burned up during normal operation (obviously a poor design). Viking refused to offer any further help aside from another authorized “national” repair center in Michigan which wanted to charge me for shipping both ways and for the replacement boards IF THEY COULD EVEN ORDER THEM!
That being said, this was a wonderful unit for the time it worked, but 1 year is just not enough normal use to justify the $500 investment. I absolutely can’t recommend anyone purchase this unit and I will never again buy from Viking without some type of service plan or extended warranty to avoid this kind of loss. Please do your homework before spending this kind of money!
