I purchased the Oreck XL based upon the advertisements that it was effective and lightweight so my wife could use it with her arthritis. Good points are that it sure is lightweight, it folds over so that you easily can get under most furniture and the switch is handy to your hand to turn it off and on.
However, the primary bad point is that you pay a heavy price for the light weight in that the vacuuming power simply is very poor. Unfortunately physics dictates that for a given size venturi in order to develop a powerful suction you simply must have a powerful motor and the Oreck motor is woefully underpowered. They cannot overcome the laws of physics by slick advertising. I found that, in contrast to its wildly inaccurate ads, it was very poor at picking dirt and debris. For example, despite repeated passes, it could not easily pick up either the dog hair left by my German short hair pointer nor the small pieces of vegatation that seem to get tracked in on a daily basis to our Florida home. It was even more woefully inadequate at picking up any type of debris from our tile floors. This failure to clean was especially distressing to me due to the high cost of this vacuum. I would strongly recommend saving your money to buy a vacuum such as a Eureka that works better and just put up with the reality that it will be somewhat more difficult to push around due to having a heavier and more effective motor.
